Information for Exchange Students

AKV|St.Joost - School of Fine Art and Design, is part of Avans University and offers undergraduate (BA) and graduate (MA) courses in fine art and design. There are approximately 1200 students enrolled on our full-time and part-time courses, including international students.

The school has two locations: Breda and ‘s-Hertogenbosch, situated in the south of the Netherlands. Both schools have large open studios, workspaces, and numerous facilities for technical support such as:
Computer graphic studios, workshop/studios for photography, a media department with audio-visual facilities, a workshop for printmaking/silkscreen printing, a workshop for offset and publishing, workshops for steel- and wood manufacturing, and a vast ceramic division. To accomplish these facilities, there are two libraries and a large media centre with a focus on Contemporary Art & Design. The auditorium is used for viewing, lectures and theoretical instruction.

AKV|St.Joost invites undergraduate students from partnerschools to explore and develop their creativity under the guidance of professional teaching staff. Students from schools who are not partners can also apply for a three months study at AKV|St.Joost. In most cases, this period (three months) of study, is free of tuition fees.

ERASMUS
The Erasmus programme is a component of the European programme ‘LifeLong Learning’ from the European Commission for mobility of higher education in Europe. The Erasmus programme aims to encourage cooperation among the higher education institutions of Europe. An Erasmus scholarship covers a period of three to twelve months. In order to get the Erasmus scholarship your own institution must participate in the programme and must also have a bilateral agreement with AKV|St.Joost before your mobility period abroad starts.

The number of students that can participate in an exchange is limited (according to the agreements made in the bilateral). For exchange students from partner schools and other schools it is possible to apply for a course at AKV|St.Joost for a period of three months in one of the following departments:

ACADEMIC CALENDAR

For students who want to participate in an exchange, we offer a period of study for 3 to 5 months in the Spring Term. We prefer to welcome exchange students in this period. Students need to be in their second or third year undergraduate (BA) Specialisation in a particular field, to strengthen artistic skills, within a specific art or design discipline is also possible. In that case we advice to make an application for the first semester which starts around August/September. Study plan, motivation and a portfolio with recent work is subject to approval. Students that apply need to be in their third or fourth year undergraduate (BA). An interview might be part of the application. Exact dates to be discussed with the course leader of the department.

APPLICATION

To apply for a place as an exchange student we ask you to send by post or email:

  • a letter of motivation (plan for study) in English, signed for approval by your head of department.
  • a portfolio of relevant, recent work, preferably in PDF.
  • a short CV – state the year and level you are studying at.
  • the department of your choice.
  • full address, telephone number and email address


Your portfolio and letter will be viewed and judged by the course leader.
If you are accepted you will receive a letter of acceptation, after which you are invited to enroll through Avans University of Applied Sciences.

EXTRA INFORMATION
Language:
Our courses are in Dutch even though most of our staff and students can speak English. The students and teachers will do their best to help you to understand the assignments. We expect that all exchange students can speak and understand English.
Accommodation:
We do not offer accommodation or housing for students. You can contact International Office Avans (internationaloffice@avans.nl) for information on temporary housing-possibilities or check the Avans website: www.studyatavans.com.
Insurance:
When you are studying in the Netherlands make sure you are properly insured. There are certain rules concerning your healthcare insurance which you have to comply with. Also it is highly advisable to take out a liability insurance.
